Stuck in evolution
I’ve been working as a pc-technician for about 18 months now. And over this period I’ve seen an evolution in processor speeds, usuage of multicore processors. A new generation of memory (DDR2) and the next generation of graphics cards (Directx 10).
While all of these new things are super for the consumer I still wonder about those other simple things that seem to be stuck in time.
Ah the Ye ol’ PS2 connector, why do companies still bother with it? I don’t know, every single motherboard still comes with two PS2 connectors (keyboard & mouse). Getting rid of those ports would allow you to have 4 USB ports instead, USB has been around long enough so why haven’t we switched to usb for all input devices yet? (I know I know, apple has.) Fujtisu-Siemens actually had a model that didn’t have PS2 ports later on the ports were re-introduced. It turns out the customers weren’t ready for such a big change…
Another annoyance I have with motherboards that have an integrated graphics chip is the fact that virtually all boards come with a dsub connection instead of a dvi connection. These days a 17″ tft display with dvi is very affordable so why should we still use the ye ol’ dsub vga connector? These motherboards could be really interresting if they had a dvi connection for self built home theatre pc’s. Especially if you realise that dvi is easilly converted to a hdmi port.
I just think it is odd that we progress so much on one part but forget about other parts. It’s not just a component that should evolve, it is the complete package that should.
